What Is Rekeying?

Change Who Has Access
Without Changing the Lock

Every pin-tumbler lock cylinder contains a set of driver and key pins that are cut to match a specific key. Rekeying is the process of replacing those internal pins with a new set, so the cylinder now operates with a different key — and every copy of the old key no longer turns the lock.

The lock hardware — the deadbolt body, strike plate, and door hardware — stays in place. Only the cylinder’s internal configuration changes. This makes rekeying a cost-effective way to control access when you move into a new home, hand over keys to a contractor or tenant, or lose a copy of a key and want to be certain no one else can use it.

Charlotte Locksmith’s technicians carry a full range of rekeying kits compatible with the most common residential and commercial lock brands. We rekey on location, cut new keys on-site, and test every lock before leaving. Most residential rekeying appointments covering multiple locks are completed within one visit.

If you are comparing rekeying to a full lock change, the main difference is cost and condition. Rekeying makes sense when the lock hardware is in good working order and you only want to change who holds a working key. Replacing the lock is the better choice when the cylinder is worn, the hardware is damaged, or you want to upgrade to a higher-grade lock.

What We Offer

Rekeying Services
We Provide in Charlotte

From a single front door deadbolt to a full property rekey after a move, our technicians handle residential and commercial rekeying for most standard and high-security lock cylinders.

01

Residential Rekey Service

We rekey deadbolts, knob locks, and lever sets throughout your home so all exterior doors operate on one new key — or on separate keys, depending on your preference. Ideal after purchasing a home, ending a tenancy, or losing a house key. See our full residential rekeying page for details.

02

Commercial Rekey Service

Offices, retail spaces, and multi-tenant buildings benefit from rekeying when staff changes occur, a key is lost, or a lease ends. We rekey commercial-grade lock cylinders on-site and can coordinate with existing master key systems to keep access hierarchies intact. Learn more at our commercial rekeying page.

03

Rekey to a Single Key

If your home has multiple exterior doors that each require different keys, we can rekey every cylinder to match a single key blank. This is often done alongside new construction move-ins, property purchases, or when homeowners have accumulated multiple keys for different doors over time. We cut the master key on-site and test every lock before completing the job.

04

High-Security Lock Rekeying

High-security cylinders — including Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and ASSA Abloy products — use restricted keyways and patented pinning systems that require specialist rekeying equipment and authorized dealer status. Our technicians carry the tools and key blanks needed to rekey these cylinders without damaging the restricted keyway. See our high-security lock services for more.

05

Rekey After Moving In

When you move into a previously occupied home, the number of outstanding key copies held by former residents, real estate agents, contractors, and neighbors is usually unknown. Rekeying all exterior cylinders on the day you move in is the straightforward way to establish full control over who holds a working key. We can typically rekey a complete home in a single scheduled visit.

06

Rekey After Key Loss

A lost key does not always require replacing the entire lock. If the hardware is functioning correctly, rekeying the cylinder costs less than installing new hardware and accomplishes the same goal — the lost key becomes inactive and new keys are cut to the new configuration. We can also cut additional key copies on-site if multiple household members need working keys after the rekey is complete.

How It Works

Inside a Lock Cylinder:
What Rekeying Changes

A standard pin-tumbler lock cylinder contains a series of spring-loaded driver and key pin pairs sitting in vertical chambers above the cylinder plug. When the correct key is inserted, each key pin is lifted to a specific height, aligning all driver pins above the shear line and allowing the plug to rotate.

Rekeying replaces the key pins inside the cylinder with a new set cut to different heights. The cylinder plug, housing, springs, and driver pins remain in place. After rekeying, only the new key — cut to match the new pin heights — lifts each pin pair to the correct position to rotate the lock. Every key cut to the old pin configuration will fail to align the pins and the lock will not turn.

This process takes only a few minutes per cylinder for a skilled technician. The lock hardware stays on the door throughout, and the finished result is functionally identical to installing a brand-new lock — without the cost of new hardware.

  • Key pins replaced with new heights; driver pins and springs unchanged
  • Old keys become inactive immediately after rekeying is complete
  • New keys cut on-site to match the new pin configuration
  • Lock hardware remains mounted on the door throughout the process
  • Works on most standard keyways including Kwikset, Schlage, Baldwin, and others
  • Multiple cylinders can be rekeyed to match a single key in one visit
Rekey vs. Replace

When to Rekey and
When to Replace the Lock

Rekeying and lock replacement accomplish different things. Choosing between them depends on the condition of the existing hardware and what you are trying to achieve.

Rekeying is the right choice when the lock hardware is in sound working condition — the deadbolt throws smoothly, the cylinder turns without stiffness, and there is no visible damage to the housing or strike plate. In this case, the only thing that needs to change is the key that operates it, and rekeying achieves that at a lower cost than hardware replacement.

A full lock change or new lock installation is the better option when the cylinder is worn and does not turn reliably, the lock grade is lower than you want, there is physical damage from forced entry, or you are upgrading to a smart lock or high-security product. Replacing the lock also makes sense when the door hardware itself needs updating for aesthetic or functional reasons.

  • Rekey: hardware is functional, only key control needs to change
  • Rekey: moving in, ending a tenancy, or a key was lost
  • Replace: cylinder is worn, stiff, or does not turn consistently
  • Replace: lock was damaged or a security upgrade is needed
  • Replace: switching to a smart lock or keypad entry system
  • Our technicians assess each lock on arrival and recommend the appropriate service

We Come to
Your Door

All rekeying work is carried out at your property. There is no need to remove locks, transport hardware, or wait for parts to arrive. Our technicians carry rekeying kits for all major residential and commercial lock brands and cut new keys on-site using portable key-cutting equipment.

When you call, we confirm the lock brand and number of cylinders to be rekeyed so the technician arrives prepared for your specific hardware. Proof of property ownership or a signed lease is required before we rekey any lock. We serve homeowners, landlords, property managers, and commercial tenants throughout Charlotte and the surrounding communities including Huntersville, Matthews, Concord, and Mint Hill.

How It Works

Our Rekeying
Service Process

Every rekeying appointment follows the same structured process to confirm the right technician arrives with the right equipment for your locks.

1

Call With Your Lock Details

Let us know the lock brand, number of cylinders to be rekeyed, and your address. This lets us confirm the rekeying kit needed and give you an accurate price before we arrive.

2

On-Site Verification

Your technician arrives at your property, verifies ownership or tenancy documentation, and inspects each cylinder to confirm it is in rekeying condition before providing a written price.

3

Cylinder Rekeyed

The cylinder is removed from the door hardware, pins are replaced with the new configuration, and the cylinder is reinstalled. New keys are cut on-site to the new pin heights.

4

Test & Confirm

You test each rekeyed lock with the new key — in both the locked and unlocked position — before the job is closed. We confirm every cylinder is operating correctly and answer any questions you have.

Common Questions

Rekeying
FAQs

Answers to the questions Charlotte homeowners and property managers ask most about rekeying locks.

Is rekeying as secure as replacing the lock?

Yes — provided the hardware itself is in good working order. After rekeying, the old key configuration no longer operates the lock, which is the same result you would get from installing new hardware. The security of the lock after rekeying is identical to what it was before, because the cylinder grade, the housing, and the deadbolt mechanism are unchanged. If you want a higher-security cylinder, a lock change or high-security installation is the appropriate next step.

Do I need to bring my locks to you, or do you come to the property?

We come to your property. All rekeying is done on-site — the lock stays mounted on the door throughout the process. We carry portable rekeying kits for all major lock brands and a key-cutting machine in the service vehicle, so new keys are cut and tested before we leave. There is nothing you need to remove or prepare in advance.

What lock brands can you rekey?

We cover the most common residential and commercial brands found in the Charlotte area, including Kwikset, Schlage, Baldwin, Defiant, Weiser, Yale, Corbin Russwin, and Sargent, among others. For high-security brands with restricted keyways — such as Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and ASSA Abloy products — we carry authorized rekeying kits where available. When you call, confirm the brand on your locks and we will verify coverage before dispatching.

Can all my locks be rekeyed to one key?

In most cases, yes. If all your exterior locks use the same brand and keyway, we can rekey all cylinders to match a single key. When locks are from different manufacturers using different keyways, it is not always possible to match them to one key — some may require a lock change to a compatible hardware brand if key consolidation is a priority. We assess this on arrival and advise you of your options before any work begins.

What proof of ownership or tenancy do I need?

We require documentation confirming your right to access the property before rekeying any lock. Acceptable documents include a current lease agreement showing your name and the property address, a property deed or closing statement, a current utility bill in your name at that address, or a government-issued ID combined with a mortgage statement. If you are a property manager rekeying on behalf of an owner, we ask for written authorization from the property owner.

Should I rekey or replace the locks after moving in?

Rekeying is the most practical choice in most move-in situations, provided the existing hardware is in working condition and the lock grade meets your needs. Replacing locks makes sense if the hardware is worn, the brand is low-grade, or you want to upgrade to a smart lock or new deadbolt. Our technicians can assess the existing hardware on arrival and give you a clear recommendation — there is no obligation to proceed with one service over the other.
